It hurts my heart when I hear women dismissing their heightened sensitivities and emotions that arise during the luteal and menstruation phases of their internal lunar cycle (often referred to as PMS). It’s understandable that we view women’s cycles in the way we were conditioned to in this patriarchal society we live in which operates off of a masculine, linear structure. Sadly, this misguided conditioning has led to suppression of women's innate abilities. In this blog, we will dive deeper into this topic as I feel this is a crucial unlearning that needs to happen in our society. At the very least, tapping into this lunar wisdom and gaining awareness of the gifts given to women through their cycles can help us to flow through life in modern day society with more ease and compassion. At the fullest expression, "flowing with the moon" is a step to reclaiming women's sacred cyclical power.

Think of all the times you’ve heard comments being made along the lines of “oh she must just be PMSing“ when a woman has an obvious emotional moment; expressing anger, sadness, or voices a complaint about someone’s behavior. I know I have heard it too many times to count since I was a child. This line of thinking dismisses the emotions that are coming to the surface with the reasoning that the hormone fluctuations are “causing” the emotions and therefore the emotions aren’t valid. The woman may not even be in this phase of her cycle for those comments to be made, but the message is clear; what arises during this phase of the cycle is irrational and not valid.
These heightened sensitivities are looked down upon. Shamed. One of many demonstrations of gaslighting women into submission. It’s no news that women are often referred to as crazy because their internal rhythm is not understood in society and we aren’t taught how to work with this incredible gift in a healthy way (as is the case with most emotions humans experience as uncomfortable). Many of us women have internalized this shame, dismissing the emotions and problems that surfaced during these phases of our cycle because it must have just been the hormones “causing it”. Like “it” was imagined due to the hormones shifting.

So it gets locked away again during the phases where masking our emotions is easier for us (the follicular and ovulation phases where women carry more of the masculine hormone; testosterone) until “it” comes roaring like a lion again in a few weeks. Because the emotions are valid and emotions are energy in motion. They’re meant to move. To be seen and felt. To teach and guide us..
As always, I’m speaking from my lived experiences which is all I can speak to…
Sharing what I have noticed along my journey of understanding the rhythm of the earth, lunar cycles, energy (within and around us), emotions, and the gifts of the cyclical nature within women. Through the studies I’ve done and my own life experiences, I have come to see that the shifts in hormones are simply the scientific explanation for what helps us drop the walls and masks that we carry. The hormone fluctuations are the key to accessing our innate gifts such as enhanced intuitive senses which sometimes present as psychic abilities or telepathy. Those moments where we just know that something is about to happen or feel that something is off. Or have you ever had those moments where someone said “wow you just read my mind… I was just thinking that“? Then you know exactly what I’m talking about here!
Our sensitivities are heightened during the luteal and menstruation phases (or as I like to refer to as fall and winter, following the rhythm of the earth’s seasons) so that we can use our innate gift to shed what is no longer serving us. To help us recognize where change is needed and tap into our courage to voice this when needed. Our bodies beg us to slow down and go inward.
Understanding this and harnessing this natural rhythm is one of the ways women are able to access their gifts of healing and strengthen them with training. Of accessing wisdom and discernment. Of honing in on their intuitive gifts and developing those skills with grace, practice and awareness. This is the feminine path. The path to true liberation for the feminine in my humble opinion which is simply just that.
I wasn’t able to see this until I was able to heal and tone my nervous system enough to jump off of the patriarchal hamster wheel I was trained on in the “good girl school” of life, just to earn the imagined “prize” of a man that would save or complete me so we could live happily ever after. I was stuck in a trauma bond cycle due to my childhood trauma and once I could break those chains and rip away from the need to “earn” a man’s “love” or be desired by a man, I finally had the opportunity to decide who I am and what I really want and need for myself and my children. I no longer felt like a slave to these uncontrollable, yet inevitable “mood swings“. I finally had the opportunity to develop my intuitive skills and work with the natural rhythm in my body. To be able to see that when I started to trust what was arising for me during the phases of heightened sensitivity and treated the emotions as a wise mentor, phenomenal change for the better happened in my life. Cycle by cycle, my life became more peaceful, blissful and magical. The “PMS symptoms” were no longer occurring every cycle once I stopped bottling things up in the other phases. A physical shift occurred alongside this as I experienced less cramps and lighter flow now that there was less to shed.
This incredible shift continued to blossom the more I learned to trust and follow the intuitive nudges as they came throughout my cycle, and let emotions move in real time with somatic practices.

Most of the time, this simply means giving the emotion time and space to be noticed and felt. To explore what it is trying to show me; whether it’s a wound surfacing to be reprocessed, a boundary that needs to be set, or an area that needs fine-tuning for better alignment in my world. To honor and respect what arises for me by treating those emotions as sacred guides and taking action when needed from a mindful, grounded space.
What if…
we were all taught the feminine, cyclical path that honors our natural rhythm that mirrors the rhythm of the earth and cycles of the moon? What if we were taught that these heightened sensitivities are a gift and how to harness our innate powers and abilities, and use them for transformation and growth in ourselves and others? What if we learned to trust what is intuitively arising for us during these times and build the structure of our lives around this natural rhythm instead of trying to conform to the linear solar rhythm of the masculine that doesn’t feel right in our bodies? What if men could learn this way and develop better skills to support women with gentleness and awe for all that women are capable of instead of attempting to suppress out of fear of these powers?
If anything I have shared here lit a spark of curiosity or excitement, I have offerings to go deeper. I am so grateful to be able to have discussions surrounding topics like this in our women’s lunar circles each month where we take tangible steps together to learn a different, more peaceful approach to life that works with, not against, the natural flow and rhythm of our divine feminine bodies and the Earth, blending ancient feminine practices and wisdom with a modern day life application. I also offer one on one services for more personalized support if you are interested in going deeper with me as well as weekly group somatic healing classes. My specialty is in supporting women through transformational life experiences; whether that be becoming a mother, approaching or going through a divorce, losing a loved one in death, healing from trauma, or finding your spiritual path and purpose in this lifetime… I am here for you. 🌹
